Men's Health looks to John Allan for advice

Change The Way You Shave

Doesn’t matter if your razor has 60 blades. If you rush, you won’t get a close shave. “That’s a piece of steel you’re scraping across your face. You have to respect that, ” says John Allan, founder of the John Allan’s Club salons. His advice: Make the shave a before-bedtime ritual. “After my kids are asleep, I’ll go in the bathroom and shave for half an hour. I’ll enjoy a glass of scotch, read the paper, and talk with my wife. It’s a great way to calm down and get ready for bed.” The trick is to shave thoroughly enough to ensure that your face is still smooth in the morning. Allan’s advice: Lather with a bristle brush, working the shave cream into your beard with firm, circular strokes to lift the follicles off the skin. Give your beard time to soften – at least 5 minutes – and make an initial pass, shaving with the grain. Then reapply shaving cream and make a second pass, against the grain
